Common Questions

When should I take the renewal course?

Colorado allows you to renew your CHP within 6 months before it expires. We recommend booking as early as possible — seats fill quickly, especially in fall and spring.

What do I need to bring?

A valid government-issued photo ID, your current Colorado CHP, a handgun, ammunition as specified in your booking confirmation, and eye and ear protection. Full details are sent after booking.

My permit already expired — can I still take this course?

Contact us before booking. Depending on how long ago your permit expired, you may need to take the full Initial CHP course instead of the renewal course.

Is there a written exam?

Yes. Colorado requires a written exam as part of the CHP renewal process. Our instructors walk you through the material so you're well prepared.

How long does the renewal application take after the class?

After completing the course, you submit your renewal application to your county sheriff's office. Colorado law requires the sheriff to process applications within 90 days.
